Nzoia dykes offer hope as Budalangi braces for El Niño rains

With various government agencies scaling up warnings about the effects of the looming El Niño, thousands of residents have begun preparing for the rains. In Budalangi, Busia County, some farmers have started tilling their land, a stark contrast to the usual anxiety that heavy rains bring to families in the region. Farmers are now beginning to realise the positive impact of dykes constructed along the River Nzoia, which have helped rehabilitate previously flood-prone farmlands. However, some areas remain exposed to the risk of flooding. Laura Otieno reports on communities along the Nzoia River, where the riverbank is creating new fortunes for some residents but spells doom for others.
