ODM party leader Oburu Oginga is in the United Kingdom for a medical checkup and recuperation following a bout of illness. In a statement, the party said Oburu sought to assure members that the medical checkup is routine and necessitated by his advancing age, and not a critical health condition. Oburu said his absence will test ODM’s institutions, leaving the running of the party’s affairs to Deputy Party Leaders Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, who will work closely with the National Central Committee and the secretariat. It is not clear how long Oburu will remain away. Meanwhile, the party has released a programme of activities to commemorate the first anniversary of Raila Odinga’s death in October. The programme begins on October 2nd, when members of the public have been invited to light candles in his memory. This will be followed by a rally in Kakamega for the Western region, as well as family-led activities that will culminate in a memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 15th, the day Raila died last year.
