Rex Masai inquest concludes after two years

The inquest into the fatal shooting of protester Rex Masai in 2024 has concluded after two years, with an IPOA forensic expert confirming that CCTV footage presented as evidence had not been tampered with. IPOA Senior Assistant Director of Forensics Joshua Mutua told the inquest on Monday that the footage was subjected to digital forensic analysis, which found no evidence of deletion, alteration or editing. Mutua said the videos were retrieved by IPOA before being subjected to forensic examination. He told presiding magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo that the CCTV footage and other digital evidence presented before the inquest were in their original form and had not been manipulated. The confirmation came as the inquest, which heard evidence from 30 prosecution witnesses and examined 48 exhibits, formally came to an end. The parties will now file their written submissions before the magistrate makes a determination on the circumstances surrounding Masai’s death.
