Ruto signs law unlocking new financing for SGR extension

New financing for the long-delayed expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway from Narok to the Uganda border could be on the horizon, after President William Ruto assented to the Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Amendment Act, 2026, last Friday. The new law broadens the use of the Railway Development Levy, allowing the government to use up to ninety percent of it to secure more financing for future rail projects. The development comes just days before the expected groundbreaking for the next phase of the SGR extension in Kisumu.
