In Sudan, sexual violence is being used as a weapon of war. It has become “a defining feature of the conflict'' says Medecins sans Frontieres. But for survivors, the nightmare does not end after the trauma. If they give birth to babies, not only do they face social stigma but also new obstacles. When the father is unknown or cannot be identified, it makes it more difficult to obtain a birth certificate and to register the child. And no official documents means no legal identity.
