Six months after the government rolled out the Usajili Mashinani programme, a section of residents from Mageta Island in Siaya registered for identification cards for the first time in their lives. Senior citizens, most of whom have lived on the island for more than five decades, said they had been unable to travel to the mainland for registration, locking them out of crucial government services. Laura Otieno now reports on the joy of identification, and the eagerness of residents of the island to be included in the country’s democratic processes.
