Victims of Yahya Jammeh's regime seek justice after 31 years- BBC Africa

The Gambia recently swore into office a top British legal expert, Martin Hackett, as the country’s first special prosecutor to investigate crimes committed under ex-president Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule. His tenure was replete with allegations of torture, murder, rape and enforced disappearances. However, victims of the rights abuses are crying foul, slamming delays in setting up a hybrid court to try the perpetrators as a blatant denial of justice. Despite Ecowas giving the nod more than a year ago, the court remains a distant dream, leaving victims demanding more than just reparations. BBC Africa’s Thomas Naadi visited The Gambia to hear directly from those still waiting for justice and to examine whether the country’s long-promised transitional justice process is finally gaining momentum.
