Tension is brewing between conservationists and investors over proposed erection of an electric fence along Sirimon and Timau rivers in Lolldaiga Conservancy, Laikipia county. Investors argue that the fence will help reduce the ongoing human wildlife conflict which has severely affected local communities. However conservationists warn that the fence could disrupt the sensitive ecosystem where the area will lose the larger mammals that make Lolldaiga their home. Both sides are today are going for each other’s jugular with conservationist demanding that the 16Km fence take a zigzag design such that some points are erected across River Timau to allow animals get water in the river. The conservationists have already lodged an appeal before the National Environmental Disputes Tribunal seeking to have the license issued to the investors by NEMA revoked. Our reporter Margaret Kimathi now tells us of the big battle for the gem of Laikipia plains between conservationists and investors.
