The Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) has filed a certificate of urgency at the Employment and Labour Relations Court, seeking to stop the government's plan to degazette certain hardship zones and scrap related allowances for teachers. The petition claims the move is based on outdated recommendations from a 2019 report and was made without public input or scientific validation.
KETHAWA warns that removing these allowances could push teachers out of remote areas, threatening the constitutional right to education and deepening educational inequality. The case will be heard on May 20, 2025, before Hon. Lady Justice H. Wasilwa.
