School dropout and absenteeism among students have become issues of concern in arid and semi-arid regions owing to prolonged periods of drought. Hunger among learners is leading to disruption of learning and is affecting academic performance of students in Asal areas. In response to this challenge, the Child Welfare Society of Kenya, under the newly established State Department for Children Welfare Services, has initiated a pilot school feeding programme in select counties to address food insecurity.
