While enrolment of learners in Homabay County is high, retention of students especially girls is significantly low. Teenage pregnancy due to high poverty levels is among leading factors of learners dropping out of school. The Child Welfare Society of Kenya, under the newly established State Department for Children Welfare Services, has initiated a pilot school feeding programme through its Emergency Student Support intervention to facilitate retention in secondary day schools.
