MALINDI NGO PROMOTES USE OF WASTE FROM HOUSEHOLD DUMPSITES IN AGRICULTURE
A local non-governmental organisation has established eight farmer field schools in Malindi and Magarini sub-counties to promote the use of household waste as an alternative to chemical fertilisers.
In an ambitious initiative aimed at addressing climate change, the Institute of Participatory Development–Kulamusana (IPD-K) is empowering farmer groups to venture into agroforestry by using waste from household dumpsites as natural fertiliser.
Mr Raphael Mzungu Ngoma, the NGO’s Executive Director, explained that his organisation had launched the initiative to raise awareness among farmers about the importance of growing food crops while simultaneously planting trees to help restore the environment.
He was speaking at the Garashi Zhongwani Farmers Field School in Magarini Sub-County on Tuesday, where the NGO donated a 10,000-litre water tank aimed at watering a tree nursery and horticultural crops on the site
