54% of Kenyans feel oppressed by the government while exercising their civic rights. They are also accusing the government of widespread repression, legislative rollback, and suppression of civic activism. They highlighted the state's hostility towards legitimate civic activity, violent suppression of peaceful assembly and protests, extrajudicial killings, and abductions.  A National Assessment of Civic Space trends in Kenya by The Defenders coalition has also found that Kenya's state of free Civic Space has moved from obstruction in previous regimes to suppression in the current regime. This is according to the Global Alliance of Civil Society Organisations, CIVICUS.
