UNICEF ranks Kenya third globally for medicalised FGM cases

Kenya has been ranked third globally for cases of medicalised FGM by the United Nations Children's Fund - UNICEF. The HIGH ranking has jolted the country not only because the practice persists, but because it is increasingly being carried out by trained health professionals, the very people entrusted to protect women’s health, who are now performing a procedure they know to be dangerous, traumatic, and life-altering. East African legislators - EALA are pushing for a powerful regional law dubbed the Elimination of FGM Bill, 2025,  to close the loopholes that allow both medicalised and cross-border FGM to thrive.
