EUCALYPTUS TREES ON WATER SOURCES
Farmers are being urged clear Eucalyptus trees along river line or near any water source and instead replace them with indigenous trees such as Meru oak and African olive, that has immense benefits to both the farmer and environment. Speaking during a community outreach in Mt Kenya forest,Kirinyaga county, Environmentalists led by Karatina University dean of natural resources Dr. Flora Namu, noted that the eucalyptus trees are draining the underground water sources in a very big way, leading to diminishing water in rivers and other catchment areas . Dr. Namu likened the eucalyptus trees to water pumps which drain water from the underground and wetlands.
