Sebastian Onyango, a 2025 Grade Nine candidate at Nyakwere Primary School in Migori County, who scored 62 points has shocked his teachers and classmates after choosing to repeat Grade Nine due to lack of school fees. Onyango pleaded with teachers to allow him to repeat Grade Nine with the hope that his family will afford fees next year. Onyango’s case is not isolated and brings to the fore the critical questions on access to education for vulnerable children in Kenya.
