Human rights defenders are raising alarm over what they describe as a shrinking civic space in the country, warning that the trend poses a threat to freedom of expression and democracy. Speaking during the launch of the research report on activism in Kenya, the stakeholders in the sector called for concerted efforts in protecting the space to enhance the socio-economic and political conversations and amplify the voices of the marginalized. The players led by nominated senator Crystal Asige, at the same time urged activists to take the lead in mobilising young people to register as voters, promote peaceful participation, and defend the democratic space ahead of the 2027 general elections.
