Sugarcane farmers are counting losses as mature cane rot on farms following closure of all sugar milling companies. Cane farmers drawn from Kericho, Kisumu and Nandi counties have now issued a three-day ultimatum to the agriculture and food authority to rescind the closure of sugar milling in Nyanza and Western regions, failure to which they’ll storm the authorities’ offices. And as Laura Otieno reports, the farmers called on President William Ruto to institute reforms in the sugar sector to set the country on a path of self-reliance in producing the sweetener.
