A growing crisis in maternal healthcare has come to light as health officials report that underage mothers are being detained in hospitals after delivery due to their inability to pay medical bills. Speaking during a health briefing in Kakamega County, a senior health official in the county revealed that teenage mothers are disproportionately affected under the current Social Health Authority SHA, which does not recognize underage mothers as independent beneficiaries. Unlike the now-defunct Linda Mama initiative, which covered all mothers including adolescents, SHAH requires formal registration, a barrier for minors typically listed under their parents’ documentation.
