Civil society organizations have noted with concern the government’s policy to begin exclusively issuing new ID applicants and people seeking to replace lost IDs with the new digital ID, known as maisha card. This is despite the project being marred with irregularities and exclusion concerns. They have called on the government to reverse the making of digital IDs mandatory and instead focus on voluntary enrollment through public awareness while also putting in an enhanced data protection framework.
