It has now emerged that the Central Bank of Kenya awarded a German-based money printer a whopping 14.2 billion Kenya shillings to print the new currency. According to CBK governor Kamau Thugge, the procurement process followed the law. However, the finance committee of the national assembly which he appeared before this morning is questioning why the tender comes shortly after de la rue exited the country. The national treasury will no longer have 40% returns as it was with the previous printing deal in 2019.
