January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on one of the most common yet preventable cancers affecting women. Despite advances in medicine, many women are still being diagnosed late, often due to lack of awareness and limited screening. Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix and is most commonly caused by the Human Papillomavirus, also known as HPV. The virus is widely transmitted, yet many women are unaware of its link to cervical cancer. According to medical experts, cervical cancer often develops silently. Early stages may present no warning signs, while advanced stages can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intercourse. Screening tests such as Pap smears and HPV testing are simple, quick, and can save lives. When detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable. Prevention remains the strongest defense. The HPV vaccine has been proven to significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer and is recommended for girls and young women before exposure to the virus. Hospitals and health professionals are using Cervical Cancer Awareness Month to encourage women to prioritize their reproductive health and take advantage of available screening and vaccination services. As we observe Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the message from health experts is clear, early screening, vaccination, and awareness can save lives. Women are urged to speak to their healthcare providers and take action toda
