Civil society groups under Haki Madini Kenya have called for an immediate halt to gold mining in Kakamega County, Vihiga County, and Siaya County, citing flawed land acquisition and lack of consent from affected communities. A fact-finding mission revealed alleged fraud, including documents signed in the names of deceased persons, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the process.
The coalition, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission and Transparency International Kenya, also warned of intimidation and misuse of the justice system. They condemned deadly clashes in Ramula linked to protests against mining by Shanta Gold and urged authorities to protect citizens’ rights.
