Cabinet Secretary for Environment Deborah Barasa has directed the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to shut down all facilities found violating environmental regulations and to immediately intensify inspections on all plants discharging waste into rivers and tributaries. The CS issued the directive during an inspection tour of Shreeji Chemicals and Canon Chemicals in Mlolongo, Machakos County. During the operation, Shreeji Chemicals was closed for non-compliance with environmental standards, and its three proprietors were arrested as authorities moved to enforce strict pollution control measures. The crackdown signals a tougher stance by the government on industrial pollution and illegal waste discharge, with NEMA expected to carry out nationwide compliance audits on similar facilities.
