Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced that 107,000 Community Health Promoters will start receiving comprehensive medical cover under the Social Health Insurance Fund from July 1. Speaking during the launch of the Mombasa Radiotherapy Centre and LINAC machine at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, Duale also confirmed that Universal Health Coverage workers will transition to permanent and pensionable terms after June 30 following an agreement between the national and county governments.
The CS said the newly launched radiotherapy machine, procured with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency, will improve access to cancer treatment services in the Coast region and reduce the need for patients to travel to Nairobi for care. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said more machines will be acquired to strengthen cancer treatment in Kenya, while Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said the county is expanding Coast General Hospital to make it a leading referral facility in the region.
