More than half a century ago, children born with intellectual challenges were regarded a tragedy and bad omen, with some stigmatized parents sending such children to mental asylum. It was only in 1964 that the Kenya Education Commission recommended the establishment of special schools to promote inclusivity in the country’s education. How is the situation like decades later? Our reporter Ann Mwendwa visited a 45-year old special school for the intellectually challenged learners and filed the following report.
