Farmers in Garissa County are demanding compensation from the government over years of devastating floods that have destroyed crops, irrigation systems, and livelihoods along the River Tana.
Through the Garissa Farmers Network, the farmers report that recurring floods caused by the release of water from upstream dams have resulted in losses every rainy season since 2004.
Led by Mohamed Sheikh Hassan, the farmers accuse authorities of issuing only flood alerts rather than providing compensation or permanent solutions to the crisis. They are now calling for accountability and the construction of additional dams and canals to control excess water.
