Rais wa Uganda Yoweri Museveni alisema Jumapili Marekani imejikadiria kupita kiasi umuhimu wake kwa mataifa ya Afrika Mashariki baada ya Washington kuamua kuiondoa Kampala kutoka katika mkataba wa biashara ya mpango wa African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, kwa kukiuka haki za binadamu.
Marekani wiki iliyopita ilisema ilikuwa inaziondosha nchi kadhaa kutoka mpango wa African Growth and Opportunity Act, AGOA, kuanzia Januari 2024.
AGOA inatoa fursa kwa nchi za Kiafrika, zinazo kidhi viwango vya demokrasia na kutathminiwa kila mwaka, kuuza bidhaa zao katika soko la Marekani bila ya kutozwa ushuru – soko la ulimwengu lenye wanunuzi wengi zaidi.
Katika barua yake aliyotuma Bunge la Marekani, Rais wa Marekani Joe Biden alisema serikali za Jamhuri ya Afrika ya Kati na Uganda zote "zilishiriki katika uvunjaji wa sheria za haki za binadamu zinazotambuliwa kimataifa." (VOA).
