Journalists, conservationists, fishers and blue economy stakeholders have called for more accurate and community-centred reporting on ocean conservation along Kenya’s coast. Speaking during the Second Annual Environmental Media Dialogue at Vipingo Ridge in Kilifi County, participants said many grassroots conservation efforts remain overlooked despite communities playing a key role in protecting marine ecosystems.
Participants stressed the need to preserve indigenous knowledge and strengthen collaboration between journalists and conservation groups. Media for Nature co-founder Mazera Thomas Ndurya urged journalists to document traditional ecological knowledge, while stakeholders also called for greater recognition of community organisations involved in protecting shorelines, restoring coral reefs and promoting sustainable use of ocean resources.
