The Kenya Ports Authority has recorded a 10.9 percent growth in cargo throughput in 2025, driven largely by increased transit cargo destined for neighbouring countries. Regional political activities, including general elections in Tanzania and Uganda, created supply chain disruptions that saw more cargo diverted to Kenya, resulting in congestion at the port of Mombasa. KPA managing director Captain William Ruto has outlined key mitigation strategies, including diverting some vessels to the port of Lamu and accelerating expansion projects at the port of Mombasa.
