Kericho Governor Eric Mutai pleaded “not guilty” to all three charges as his impeachment trial opened in the Kenya Senate on Wednesday, August 27.
The County Assembly accuses Mutai of:
- Gross violation of the Constitution and other laws
- Gross misconduct
- Abuse of office
The proceedings quickly turned heated, with lawyers clashing over the validity of the electronic voting system used by MCAs on August 15. Mutai’s legal team, led by Senior Counsel Katwa Kigen, argued that the vote was irregular, claiming some members voted while absent and others voted twice.
Stay tuned for full coverage of Kenya’s high-stakes political drama as the Senate decides the fate of the Kericho County boss.
