Communication has been cited as an important tool in fighting injustices in New Caledonia. During an interactive session held in Nairobi, participants from Kenya and Azerbaijan said the riots in New Caledonia stem from perceived injustices related to voting power amendments that disadvantage the indigenous Kanak population. International voices, including from the Baku Initiative Group and NGOs, have been calling for France to respect Indigenous rights in New Caledonia and beyond. New Caledonia is a semi-autonomous French territory.
