Residents in the lower parts of Tana River County have been urged to move to higher ground as water levels in River Tana continue to rise following heavy rainfall in the Mount Kenya region. Kenya Red Cross Coast Region Programme Coordinator Mohamed Rajab said flooding has already displaced families, cut off villages and left some areas marooned, calling for urgent evacuation.
Rescue operations are ongoing, but affected families need food, shelter and other essential supplies. Health officials have also warned of a rising risk of water-borne diseases, with early cases reported. The floods have affected parts of Bangale Sub-County, destroying over 50 farms, and authorities warn that more than 500 households could face food shortages if the situation worsens.
