At least 24 children — 19 girls and 5 boys — died after a fire swept through two primary schools in Bukavu, eastern DRC, on Thursday morning. AFC‑M23 says the blaze began in Tshimpunda, Kadutu Commune, before spreading to homes and schools. Rescue teams contained the flames, but 29 people remain hospitalized, 21 in intensive care. Authorities fear the toll may rise. Rebel‑appointed officials and the Ministry of Education have pledged investigations and urgent support. Many who lost their homes found refuge in nearby schools, in need of assistance.
