Niger miners’ deaths: ‘We drank our urine and sweats’ - BBC Africa

Two survivors have told the BBC that detainees at a Nigerian detention facility became so dehydrated that some drank urine and sweat to survive, after officials allegedly denied them water while they were held in a cramped, poorly ventilated room. The BBC was granted exclusive access to the facility in Niger State, north-central Nigeria where at least 50 suspected illegal miners were detained before 37 died. Authorities say the cause of the deaths remains under investigation. BBC Africa’s Madina Maishanu has the story.
