President William Ruto has come out to defend the contentious finance bill 2023 that seeks to introduce a 3% housing levy on all salaried kenyans. If passed alongside the budget on the 15th of June, it will see an increase in fuel vat from 8% to 16%. however, the head of state while in a thanksgiving service at Busia stadium in Busia county has said the housing levy has been crafted to create millions of jobs for youths through the affordable housing program. Busia senator Okiya Omtata has however told the president that the housing levy should be voluntary and would challenge the finance bill in court if it is passed in parliament. Azimio coalition has also vowed to shoot down the bill in parliament.
