More than 600 Early Childhood Development and Education (ECD) teachers in Siaya County are demanding the immediate payment of millions of shillings in salary arrears, accusing the county government of neglect and unfair treatment.
Led by their chairperson Barrack Omondi, the teachers say they have gone unpaid for up to three years despite being absorbed into permanent and pensionable terms in 2023. They also claim their long-awaited gratuity for years served under contract has not been released.
Some teachers, including Lillian Adhiambo, allege discrimination in salary payments, saying while others have received their dues, many have been left out without explanation. The situation, they say, reflects irregular employment practices and favoritism within the system.
