The government has been urged to increase capitation for learners in special schools. This was the clarion call during a deaf awareness campaign in Busia County as Kenya joined the world in marking deaf awareness month. Speaking during a procession to raise awareness on challenges facing the deaf community, Mundika Special School head teacher Ruth Nyange said most education funds are pumped towards day schools, which is a challenge to boarders with special needs. She also called on Kenyans to embrace learning sign language as the country has few sign language teachers and interpreters. The theme of this year's deaf awareness campaign is “Sign up for Sign Language Rights”.
