We fondly refer to our planet together with all the creation as ‘Mother Earth.’ Interestingly, women have long been relegated to play second fiddle to men in efforts to preserve and restore our Mother Earth. The situation is been aggravated in pastoralist communities in Kenya, where many conservancies are located. But a humble initiative in the outskirts of Amboseli National Park at the Kenya-Tanzania border is acting as a living example of the vital ingredient that conservation world has been missing by excluding women. Barely five years, the creation Team Lionesses – an all-women rangers’ unit at the Olgulului Community Conservancy, has changed the perception about role of women in wildlife protection. The idea of forming Team Lionesses was conceptualized in 2019 as a way of saving girls from early marriages and provide young women with gainful employment opportunities.
