A 60 million shillings taxpayer-funded retail market in Kitengela town remains deserted after power supply in the facility was disconnected barely a year after it was officially opened. The two-storey market, opened in March 2025 after stalling for nearly six years, has been without electricity for the last four months. Kenya Power disconnected supply over accumulated electricity bills amounting to 400,000 shillings. The second floor is now deserted, with traders reporting losses and unmet promises of a 24-hour economy. Kajiado County says high power costs are to blame and is considering green energy, even as it owes Kenya Power over 100 million shillings for markets and street lighting.
