AUDITOR GENERAL WARNS GOVERNORS OVER PENDING BILLS AS LAIKIPIA LEADERSHIP FACES SCRUTINY

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has cautioned governors against leaving behind unpaid pending bills as they prepare to exit office after the end of their current tenure. Speaking in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, during a stakeholder engagement, Gathungu criticised the recurring practice of county administrations leaving liabilities to their successors, warning that such fiscal indiscipline could undermine county economies and Kenya’s overall economic growth. Gathungu challenged Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu to ensure that all outstanding liabilities are properly budgeted for and settled before he leaves office. Laikipia County has faced criticism over claims that more than Sh1.3 billion was owed to contractors and suppliers who did business with the previous administration.
