The once-barren plains of Galana-Kulalu are being transformed into productive farmland through modern irrigation, solar energy and commercial agriculture.
At Nyumba Agri Products Limited, more than Sh6 billion has been invested in farming operations covering parts of Kilifi and Tana River counties. The farm is cultivating commercial maize, seed maize, onions, cassava, soybeans and sisal.
With 32 centre-pivot irrigation systems, the farm uses water from the Galana River, reservoirs and earth dams to support year-round production. Solar power runs much of the irrigation system, helping overcome limited access to the national electricity grid.
The project is also embracing value addition, including onion drying and processing, cassava starch production and the construction of a sisal processing plant.
Beyond food production, the project is creating employment for surrounding communities, with about 1,800 people currently working at the farm.
