Government launches oil drilling in Lokichar, Turkana as commercial production begins

The Kenya Kwanza administration today reignited the country's oil dream as Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi presided over the groundbreaking of the South Lokichar Oil Project in Turkana East, an undertaking he said that marks a key milestone in Kenya’s journey to commercial oil production. As Ayub Abdikadir reports, the new push appears to be the actualisation of commitments by regional heads and stakeholders to end dependency on oil from the traditional oil-producing countries in the Gulf, some of which have trimmed production, with others shutting oil wells altogether.
