MEKATILILI WA MENZA FESTIVAL HONOURS GIRIAMA HEROINE AS COMMUNITY URGES CULTURAL REVIVAL

Shakahola Village in Kilifi County came alive as hundreds gathered for the annual Mekatilili wa Menza Festival, honouring the legendary Giriama heroine whose resistance to colonial rule continues to inspire coastal communities more than a century later. Held at the historic site where Mekatilili wa Menza famously confronted colonial District Commissioner Arthur Champion, the festival celebrated Mijikenda heritage through traditional music, dance and cultural forums.
