Women human rights defenders in Mombasa have condemned the rising number of deaths in police custody and alleged enforced disappearances, calling for urgent reforms, justice and accountability within Kenya's law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at Tononoka Social Hall, the activists expressed solidarity with mothers of victims of custodial deaths who staged a separate demonstration in Nairobi. SHE Rises Executive Director Salma Ahmed said Kenyans should not continue losing young lives in places meant to guarantee safety. The group called for thorough investigations, prosecution of culpable officers, installation of CCTV cameras in police cells and stronger police oversight.
