Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu will remain behind bars after the High Court declined to grant him bail pending appeal. The court ruled that he failed to present sufficient grounds for release. Instead, the court directed that his main appeal be heard on a priority basis. Waititu had sought bail on health grounds, but the court dismissed his argument, stating that prison facilities have adequate medical services and serious cases are referred to specialized hospitals. The court also emphasized that bail is not automatic and must be justified with an arguable appeal that has a chance of success. Additionally, the court rejected Waititu’s claim that his appeal would be delayed, affirming that the case will be heard and determined within two months, as it has already been filed. Waititu was sentenced to 12 years in prison or a KSh 53.3 million fine after being convicted of engaging in corrupt business dealings during his tenure as governor.
