At least nine lives in Muthwani village in Machakos county have been lost in the last two years due to dangerous sand mining. Administrators say the heavy downpour that was witnessed earlier this month in several parts of the country aggravated the situation, leading to more weakening of the walls of mining pits with three people being buried alive in the month of April due to collapsing of walls. The shallow pits continue to pose a danger to the residents even as the youth still engage in illegal mining activities despite an avalanche of warnings.
