Kenyans will now be required to renew their national identity cards after every ten years. Immigration and Citizenship Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok says the directive is in line with the government's decision to have all new IDs dubbed maisha cards digitized as their microchip only lasts for a period not exceeding ten years just like other documents such as ATMs. Earlier on, civil society groups had raised concerns regarding the transparency and legality of the cards arguing that implementation of the system lacked public consultation and could infringe on privacy rights.
