Players in the fisheries sector across Africa are calling for a more strategic and coordinated approach to strengthen the governance of the continent's aquatic ecosystems.
According to Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, African countries must remain vigilant against complex transboundary threats, including illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, which continues to undermine marine ecosystems and deplete critical fish stocks. Participants at the continental forum are urging governments to adopt a multinational approach that promotes scientific research, evidence-based policy formulation and stronger regional collaboration to ensure sustainable management of aquatic resources. The forum provides a crucial platform to harmonise stock assessment, resource valuation, ecosystem sustainability and data alignment under a shared vision for Africa's blue economy.
