Environmental stakeholders, judicial officers, community groups, and leaders have called on coastal communities to take a leading role in protecting Kenya's oceans and marine ecosystems from pollution and the effects of climate change.
Speaking during a beach clean-up exercise at Shelly Beach in Likoni, Mombasa County, Environment and Land Court Judge Anthony Ombwayo warned that receding shorelines and expanding inland water bodies are clear signs of climate change, largely driven by deforestation. He noted that only three climate change-related cases are currently active in Kenyan courts despite growing environmental challenges.
